Reliance Jio to launch 4G VoLTE phone at Rs 500 in July
The phone is expected to be launched at the Reliance Industries’ annual general meeting scheduled for July 21.
The long-rumoured Jio feature phone with 4G VoLTE support may be unveiled at a price of Rs. 500 on July 21, the day Reliance Industries Limited is holding its Annual General Meeting. In India, Jio is the only operator working on a VoLTE-only network. Other players like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are primarily 2G/3G networks with VoLTE options available in select cities. On average, a 4G smartphone costs around Rs 3,000. Some of Jio’s Lyf Flame 4G smartphones are available for less than Rs 3,000.The move could help Reliance Jio convince users of 2G feature phones on other networks to make the switch to its 4G network, with a new aggressively-priced Jio plan also said to be on the cards to further sweeten the deal. A research note by HSBC analyst Rajiv Sharma reportedly says the Jio feature phone will be priced as low as Rs. 500 (less than $8). Jio appears to be ready to flood the market with its 4G devices, having placed orders for 18-20 million of the 4G VoLTE feature phones with some key Chinese original device .
Reliance Jio is also expected to launch a broadband service – named JioFiber – soon, which might just be announced at the AGM as well. The service is already under testing right now in six cities, though the company said it has plans to expand the trial to more cities. A flyer for the Jio broadband service says users will get 100GB data and 100Mbps speed with connection, and the service will be free for the first three months. However, they will have to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs. 4,500.
